Computer books continue decline

Published October 20, 2005 by Robbie Allen

This article summarizes a report from Bowker that shows computer books represented only 3% of all new books in 2004. This is a continued download trend for computer books since the dot-com bust. I’ve also heard from various sources that computer book sales are not recovering to the level once anticipated. Not a great time to be a computer book author :-/

Thank you for the nice front page re-design. I like the smaller font and links on the right, well done.

I’m not surprised computer books are representing a smaller chunk of the market. I think people, especially those working in technical fields, are increasingly comfortable reading online documentation. And they are increasingly aware of the rapid pace of change in some products, rapid enough to make much book content obsolete by the time of publication.

Oh I’m not surprised either, but I am frustrated at publishers’ reluctance to embrace alternate forms of publications such as pdf, podcasts, online, etc.
